Intaka Island Orienteering Competition

Table Bay (CW12) District District Orienteering 2015For the 5th year running the 1st Bothasig/Table Bay Rover Crew were responsible for running the CW12 District annual orienteering competition. We run this with a twist – with Scouts having to use their mapwork skills to find the points, rather than it being simply an exercise in their fitness. This year the event was hosted by Intaka Island Nature Reserve – big thanks to them for letting us use their island! You can find their article about the event here.

The 13 teams of kids took part in this event on the Friday evening, with only the lights of their head-torches to guide them. Intaka Island may be small, but try searching it for 25 well hidden markers in the dark! Much fun was had, and many of the Scouts, especially the younger ones, had the opportunity to brush up on their mapwork skills. We were blessed to have several encounters with the islands wildlife, seeing grysbok, lesser flamingos, red bishops and other incredible birdlife. Intaka Island is a great venue, and we encourage all Capetonians to visit it this summer.

Thanks to Devon Bowen for running the competition as chief judge, and a big thanks to Damon Hope , the Intaka Island ranger who organised the venue and oversaw the smooth running of the event in the nature reserve
