Catapult Competition 2022 – The Return!
It’s been a while since we have run the catapult competition, due to you know what. We were happy to see 6 teams and troops come out to participate!
Unfortunately, we were not able to host at the Dolphin Beach dunes and set our projectiles on fire. Instead, scouts built their catapults at 1st Monte Vista’s scout hall and launched their payloads into the park next door.
Congratulations 1st Blaauwberg, who won in both categories!
Position | Troop | Lashings | Tightness | Height penalty | Loose ends | Stability | Total | Distance |
1 | 1st Blaauwberg | 18 | 6 | 10 | 19 | 7 | 60 | 31.4m |
2 TIED | 1st Monte Vista | 14 | 7 | 10 | 16 | 10 | 57 | 18.9m |
2 TIED | 1st Bothasig | 16 | 8 | 10 | 18 | 5 | 57 | 13.3m |
4 | 1st Milnerton | 14 | 4 | 10 | 17 | 7 | 52 | 4.1m |
5 | 1st Table View | 13 | 7 | 3 | 12 | 6 | 41 | 18.2m |
6 | 1st Factreton | 8 | 2 | 8 | 12 | 5 | 35 | 6.6m |
Notable mentions:
- 1st Monte Vista implemented a sling into their catapult design. On one of their test throws, they were able to reach >40m! However, the sling was inconsistent, and they were unable to reach the same distance a second time.
- 1st Blaauwberg took full advantage of the rule stating that the bucket (the part of the catapult that holds the projectile) could be pre-made. Their shovel like bucket outperformed other troops’ cooking pot buckets!
Thanks to Devon, Terrence and the Rovers for judging, 1st Monte Vista for hosting and 1st Bothasig for sponsoring prizes. And as always, thanks to the parents and scouts who supported their scouts!
